BIRDS, BUGS, AND OTHER IDENTIFICATION

Bird-, bug-, and animal-watching falls in line with play. Pack along a pocket guide for bird identification, sit quietly as individuals or as a group, and guess how many species you think you can spot. Some camping areas offer interpretive programs and guided tours providing detailed information about the local flora and fauna. If yours doesn’t, you as a family can embark on nature sorties of your own. Magnifying glasses, binoculars, spotting scopes, and various identification guides become the family entertainment centers of the outdoors as you discover a world extensively different from the one you left at home.

Though biodiversity theory suggests that the number of plant, fish, and animal species increases as you move toward latitudes near the equator and decreases as you move toward the poles, most states where you’ll camp will have more than 400 species of birds. Some are migrants, passing through at various times of the year; others are residents and nest locally each summer. Families can keep a running list of the birds and animals sighted, and may spend hours watching them forage and care for their young.
